I love the fresh taste of corn on the cob. To me, it just looses something when you can or freeze it. So here is a recipe that takes that flavor and adds a little pep. Plus, the baked garlic pieces come out just right and tender.

At the moment I am tapped out of ideas for Tuesday updates and I really don’t want to just throw crap out there so I can say “I updated on Tuesday”. I’m going to take a break from them to either build up a buffer of good ideas, come up with something new and cool for the site, or a mixture of both or neither. :P Thanks for understanding.

Fridays will still be updated with food posts!

Because You Can’t Do Housework ALL The Time - Free Games! April 22, 2008

I want today’s post to be about something fun! So here is a little list of games that I’ve found online and enjoyed that also happen to be FREE, FREE, FREE!

Metro Siberia

Speed around and don’t blow up. Nifty graphics, simple controls, but hard to master. It’s a fun little time user.

DICEWARS

Do you like to play RISK but have a hard time getting enough players to play with you? DICEWARS by GAMEDESIGN is a slimed down but still really fun version you can play against up to seven AI players. In this version you also don’t have to worry about having the dice knock over your horsies and little dudes.

5 Days a Stranger

Do you remember the days of such classics as Monkey Island, The Dig, Sam and Max, or maybe maybe Day of the Tentacle? Are you a fan of horror stories and murder mysteries? Do you miss the days when games weren’t based on how shiny the graphics were, but on the stories and characters instead? Do you like free games that are a bit more than flash based? If any of those apply to you, you might just love this awesome adventure game from the mind of Ben Croshaw. (You know, that Yahtzee chap from Zero Punctuation?) Then after your done with it you can move on to the other three games in the series, the new more action-based prequel, or throw some cash at his feet and get the special editions.

Urban Dead

This is a cool browser based game revolving around the struggle of the city of Malton’s humans and zombies. The cities walls have been closed for two years now but the citizens of the city, both alive and undead, are still fighting the good fight. Are you a vigilante, jumping from mall to mall in search of a good time? Are you part of one of the many hordes rampaging through the city? Have you gone insane, and now either side is simply prey to you? There are many ways to play this game, and due to having a set amount of points you can use in a 24 hour period, it’s something you can pull off on your lunch break.

Zucchini Not-Hash Browns April 18, 2008

So I have this friend named Jessie and I would like to tell the world she is way cool. Why is she way cool? Well, it could be because she’s a great mom, raising amazing little Hannah, or because she’s got that Scott dude, the lead of the Machetes all in love with her. Maybe she’s way cool because she’s gives a good haircut.

To tell you the truth, she’s all those things and more. She also knows how to cook great food for a vegan. While this is not her exact recipe, I have to give her props because I only really added the carrot and gave it official measurements here.

This recipe is a twist on plain ol’ potato hash browns. The veggies give it an attractive color and brown nicely.

Zucchini Not-Hash Browns
Serves 2

1 zucchini, shredded
1 small red onion, shreaded
1 cup shredded carrot
1-2 cloves garlic, minced
Salt and pepper, to taste

By the handful, squeeze (more…)

Tips on Serving Vegan Food to Omnivores April 15, 2008

Being vegan has an array of challenges when it comes to feeding yourself. So it is not surprising that it can become very challenging when you try to feed others, more so when your guests are used to meals featuring, well, to put it bluntly, dead animals. However, there is still hope for you to be able to share a table and the same food with them. Through meals with my own family, plus hosting my vegan wedding and “mini-thanksgiving”, I’ve seen some of what works and some of what doesn’t. Here are a few tips on how to feed any omnivores you might encounter.

Start in familiar territory with favorites flavors. Many omnivores enjoy a wide range of vegan food, but they either: A: haven’t thought of it as vegan and/or B: It has always just been a side dish to whatever the “main meat” of the meal is. Look at (more…)

Take a peek at Veglicious’s cute little ice cream filled cupcakes. Mmm!

VeganYumYum has something a sweet (Tangelo Marmalade) and something a bit little sci-fi (Hasperat).

I also wanted to show off ChocolateCoveredVegan’s maple pecan bars.

I also wanted to show you the blog of Cereal Killers. it is, in their words, a “spooky, kooky coffin table cartoon art book” that contains over 70 illustrations of parodies of breakfast meals as well as some originals. Is anyone up for some Gloomios?

Re-imagined Uses April 8, 2008

I think one of the most fun parts of recycling is when you take an object with one set use and turn it into something different. Here are some twists I’ve given a few of my things…

Cupcake Holder: I see these cute stands a bunch, but unless you really, really like cupcakes or you happen to be Isa or Terry, I doubt you have an assortment of them to display 24/7. Fear not! There is an equally useful and tasty, plus a bit more nutritious thing it can display: Fruit! The rounded spaces are good for holding oranges, peaches, plums, rounder-type apples (think Gala or Granny Smith. Taller ones like red delicious can work but are sometimes too big.) and more. I like it more than your standard fruit bowl because the fruit it not resting on each other, lessening the chances of bruising.

Paper Towel Rack: I’m not a huge fan of large roll paper napkins, so I turned my old stand up rack into a handy oven mitt holder. Mine holds three glove style oven mitts and (more…)

Don’t Waste That! “Recycling” Food in the Kitchen April 4, 2008

When we have food we sometimes create waste products, like the cores of apples or empty cans or bottles. A lot of time, things like that can be composted or recycled, but sometimes they have other uses. Here are several ideas for things you can do with things that you might have not thought twice about throwing away. (Today is kinda of a “mini-recipe” day!)

smexyheart1.jpg The juice from canned fruits: I don’t blame you for throwing it out if it’s mostly high fructose corn syrup, but…

You can cook the juice in a saucepan to make a reduction or mix in a little cornstarch in first to make more of a jelly/pudding. This can be used as a garnish or topping for things like baked goods or ice cream. When using cornstarch, start with a little bit, maybe 1 tsp to 1 cup of liquid. If you feel like you need to add more in after it has begun to cook, always mix the cornstarch into a COLD liquid first before pouring in and mix, mix, mix.
